Condemnations matter. Joint statements matter. But without concrete action, they lose their purpose: to exert pressure and bring about meaningful changes in behavior.
How many times has the Islamic Republic of Iran been condemned over the past 47 years? Has it changed its behavior? No. The regime continues to threaten European security and conduct covert operations on European soil.
Europe must recognize that lasting security requires more than repeated condemnations. In my view, supporting the Iranian people's efforts to end the Islamic Republic is essential.
European governments should begin by engaging with Iranian communities in their respective countries, listening to their concerns, and paying attention to the demands expressed during protests inside Iran. They also need a clear strategy for responding swiftly and firmly to the regime's actions.
This should include expelling regime diplomats, closing its embassies, and enforcing measures against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)."
