To representatives of the Jewish community in Warsaw and Jewish organizations
Ladies and Gentlemen ,
Responding to a letter addressed to me , in which you protest against the presence of Dan Park's works at the exhibition Political Art at the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle , I would like to quote the words of the outstanding Polish art historian and my teacher , Piotr Piotrowski :
“ Art is quite a specific type of expression . I do not want to say , that it should enjoy privileges at the expense of other forms of expression . Quite the opposite . Freedom as a human right is indivisible : either is , or it is not . If it is , is this right can benefit everyone , not just artists , but also those , whose statements to the cultural hard to pass . Freedom of expression cannot be aesthetic . So that's not the point .The point is , that art to a greater extent than other forms of expression operates in symbolic language , moreover , violates the universally accepted conventions . Symbolism and breaking conventions are the value of art , but also a source of conflicts, especially in conservative , more closed and less educated societies . On the other hand, art gives society a chance to look deeper at the surroundings , to penetrate deeper into the essence of reality . "
The quoted words are for me the motto of the exhibition , which is primarily about creative freedom , which in my opinion is threatened today . This threat comes today, however, is not the environment " conservative , more closed , less educated " , as he wrote Piotr Piotrowski , but from the community well-educated , the elite , that cities begin a dialogue with the attitudes of art , which it surprising , and even seem offensive - prefer to erase them from public spaces. That's how I read the message, unfortunately, your letter , a call to censor the exhibition , even before it was opened .
I don't have my consent to do so and that's why I'm not going to remove Dan Park's works from the exhibition . I do not accept the argument , that no " decent person " should not be able to confront the artist's work . On the contrary , I think you should confront this , what worries us , irritates , offends . Art institutions give us such opportunities , they are a platform for discussion , debate and confrontation of views . I fully agree with the slogan mentioned in your letter : " Don't be indifferent . " For me, it means taking on the challenge of confronting what is painful and difficult , not escaping what censorship is .
The exhibition , which I prepared together with Jon Eirk Lundberg , involves 28 artists from various countries : Venezuela , Iraq / Denmark , Sweden , Iran / Great Britain , China , Yemen / Great Britain , the United States , Ukraine . Israeli artist Marc Provisor also participates in the exhibition . Dana works parka he considers to be very controversial , and even offensive .However, this does not stop him from presenting his own works at the exhibition , nor does it demand that Dan Park's works be removed . On the contrary , he sees it as an opportunity to engage in discussions with this artist .
I believe , that dialogue , confrontation of positions is much more appropriate way than to participate in the culture of censorship and erasing uncomfortable art . I encourage you to do so and invite you to the opening of the exhibition Political Art and to an open conversation about the works presented there .
